Ethereum Sets Schedule for New Testnet "Holesky" to Replace Goerli
On August 19, Ethereum developers announced plans to deploy a new testnet named "Holesky" in September.

Ethereum Sets Schedule for New Testnet "Holesky" to Replace Goerli
In an effort to enhance testing environments and address the Ethereum testnet supply issue, the Ethereum development team will launch the Holesky testnet on September 15, as confirmed in their recent meeting.
Then, @parithosh_j gave another update, this one on Holesky (TIL, pronounced "holskiii", not "hole-sky"!). The new testnet is planned to launch on Sept. 15 (Merge Day!). There has been a public process to request genesis allocations, and these now total 1.6B HETH

Initially named Holli, the testnet aims to provide advanced testing capabilities for the Ethereum development community. Testnets play a crucial role in blockchain development by allowing developers to debug before deploying on the official mainnet.
Why Holesky? 🤔

Story similar why Görlitzer went Goerli.
Don't abbreviate it to 'holli'!https://t.co/IsPwJv3gBv
Holesky represents more than a simple upgrade, introducing significant changes to the Ethereum testnet's ETH supply, matching the 120 million ETH figure on the mainnet. With 1.6 billion gETH available, Holesky addresses the scarcity issue on primary testnets, enabling developers to freely experiment and test smart contracts.
Currently, the Ethereum ecosystem includes two main testnets, Goerli and Sepolia. Holesky is positioned as a potential replacement for Goerli, which has served the Ethereum community since 2019. Goerli is expected to be phased out to make way for Holesky, despite proposals to retain the testnet.

Coincidentally or deliberately, The Merge was also activated on September 15 in the previous year, marking a significant milestone in the development history of the world's second-largest blockchain.
Additionally, a curious discovery surrounds the name "Holesky," which is also the name of a train station in Prague, Czech Republic. Ackee Blockchain Security noted that the testnet's chain ID, 17000, corresponds to the postal code of this location.
Moreover, Ethereum recently celebrated its 8th anniversary, highlighting its growth and development from humble beginnings to its current prominent position within the broader blockchain/crypto industry.
