Ethereum developers have successfully deployed the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet, paving the way for its upcoming mainnet deployment at the end of February.

As reported by Coin68, Dencun represents one of the most significant cryptocurrency upgrade events of 2024.
However, the deployment of Dencun hasn’t been without its challenges, as Ethereum developers faced several unsuccessful upgrade attempts. This necessitated a delay from the initially planned launch in 2023 to the new target of late February 2024.

On Jan 17, at 6:32 UTC, Dencun will activate on the testnet! It will be the last network upgrade before Goerli shuts down in a few months.

Fortunately, the scheduled deployment onto the Goerli testnet on January 17 was met promptly by Ethereum developers.
Tim Beiko, protocol support team lead at the Ethereum Foundation, confirmed the successful deployment of Dencun on the Goerli testnet at 01:32 PM on January 17, 2024 (Vietnam time).

Dencun is named after combining Deneb and Cancun. This upgrade brings significant changes to Ethereum, including reduced transaction data storage costs, improved cross-chain design and staking pools, minor updates to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), changes in data storage structure within blocks, and removal of code segments allowing smart contract cancellation.

Given its importance, Dencun requires thorough testing on testnet networks to identify and address any issues. Following Goerli, Dencun will be deployed on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets. Only after successful testing across all platforms will it be implemented on the Ethereum mainnet.
