Ethereum’s Devcon 7 to Head to Southeast Asia in 2024

After considering various potential locations, the Ethereum Foundation has decided to host Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia in 2024.

As previously covered by Coin68, Devcon is the premier event for the Ethereum community, marking a significant milestone in the 8-year history of the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency.

Devcon typically serves as a gathering point for all members of the ETH community, from the leadership and core developers of the Ethereum Foundation to leading projects, emerging ideas, and passionate crypto enthusiasts. It’s where like-minded individuals come together to share their passion.

In 2022, Devcon VI took place in Bogota, Colombia, capturing the attention of the Ethereum community and the broader crypto space due to its vibrant atmosphere, impressive scale, and meticulous organization. This was the first Devcon since 2019, following a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, and it was hailed as the most successful Devcon in history for these reasons.

The allure of Devcon is undeniable, especially as the Ethereum community expands globally rather than remaining localized to early adopters.

By mid-2022, the Ethereum Foundation began soliciting feedback from the community on the location for the next Devcon, with prominent contenders including Istanbul (Turkey), Tel Aviv (Israel), Taipei (Taiwan), and Singapore. Notably, Kyber Network proposed bringing Devcon to Vietnam, specifically to Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province.

After extensive evaluation, on February 28, the Ethereum Foundation announced the latest update regarding the timing and location for Devcon 7.

Firstly, instead of returning to the annual conference schedule, the organizers have decided to push Devcon 7 to 2024. This delay will allow more time for preparation and aims to replicate the success of Devcon VI, as the extended break due to COVID allowed the Ethereum Foundation to gain further insight into the Latin American crypto community.

Secondly, Southeast Asia has been chosen as the destination for Devcon 7. The decision to select a region previously unvisited by Devcon will provide an opportunity to connect with the global Ethereum community and enhance organizational diversity. The Ethereum Foundation acknowledges that Southeast Asia is one of the highest crypto adoption regions globally, with Vietnam and the Philippines ranking first and second, respectively, according to Chainalysis.

The Ethereum team will reopen the proposal forum for the community to select the most suitable Southeast Asian city for Devcon 7, with the registration deadline set for March 15, 2023.
