Hong Kong Polytechnic University Launches Blockchain Curriculum

Hong Kong Polytechnic University has unveiled its inaugural blockchain education program, marking a significant milestone in the region's academic landscape.

According to the university's enrollment announcement, this is the first Master of Science in Blockchain Technology (MScBT) program in Hong Kong. The curriculum is designed to focus on the fundamental technologies of blockchain infrastructure, as well as the development and security of decentralized applications (dApps) based on blockchain.

The program is ideal for individuals with little or no experience who wish to gain a structured understanding of the blockchain industry, as well as for computer science graduates looking to deepen their knowledge in blockchain and related fields. The tuition fee for the program is 300,000 HKD (approximately 38,537 USD) for both local and international students.

Additionally, the program offers flexibility with full-time (FBT) and part-time (PBT) options. Full-time students will complete the program in one year, while part-time students can finish in two years, accommodating different learning schedules. The first intake is scheduled for September 2023.

With the goal of producing well-rounded graduates in the fintech sector, particularly in blockchain technology, the program promises to deliver in-depth knowledge and practical skills applicable in the field. It aims to provide a comprehensive foundation in blockchain systems and foster continuous technological innovation.

This announcement comes at a time when Hong Kong is rekindling its ambition to become a global blockchain hub, despite its past skepticism towards cryptocurrencies. The program reaffirms the potential of blockchain technology, even as the market remains turbulent following the collapse of FTX.

In late September, CoinDesk ranked Hong Kong Polytechnic University as the world’s top university with a significant impact on blockchain in 2022, acknowledging its substantial contributions to the global promotion and education of blockchain technology.

Blockchain education programs are becoming more prevalent. For instance, ChromaWay partnered with Regent University to launch a Blockchain Programming course in Ghana. Similarly, various large and small projects are rolling out educational courses directly related to their products, such as the Web3 Foundation’s collaboration with edX to offer free courses on Polkadot, indirectly expanding blockchain’s reach to a broader audience.
