AI Agents Drive 165M Crypto Payments, Dominated by USDC

What happened: Coinbase’s Head of AI Product, Lincoln Murr, revealed that the x402 protocol has processed more than 165 million payments—worth about $50 million—since launch, with roughly 99% of transactions in USDC. The x402 ecosystem now includes over 480,000 AI agents as of April 2026. Major players such as Stripe, Mastercard, and Cloudflare have launched products enabling AI agents to transact directly with stablecoins, bypassing traditional human checkouts. However, the sector is still described as being in its “Napster/LimeWire era,” with regulatory frameworks lagging behind technical advances.

Why it matters: The emergence of AI agents as active participants in crypto payments signals a shift toward machine-to-machine commerce. While the $50 million processed is a small fraction of the stablecoin market (Tether’s USDT alone exceeds $183 billion in circulation), the trend points to a future where automated agents could become a significant user base for crypto rails. The lack of mature regulation, however, raises questions about compliance, security, and consumer protection as the ecosystem grows.
