Better and Coinbase Launch Bitcoin-Backed Conforming Mortgages

What happened: Better Home & Finance and Coinbase have made bitcoin- and USDC-backed conforming mortgages generally available to eligible Coinbase One members as of August 12. Borrowers can pledge BTC or USDC as collateral for down payments on Fannie Mae-backed loans, with a collateral requirement of at least 250% of the down payment value. The assets are held in a Coinbase Prime custodial account, and borrowers receive a closing-cost credit of up to $10,000.

Why it matters: This marks the first large-scale integration of crypto assets into mainstream mortgage lending, potentially opening new pathways for crypto holders to access traditional credit markets without liquidating their assets. While the offering has attracted significant interest (a $260 million pipeline pre-launch), it also faces regulatory scrutiny due to the risk profile of large crypto collateral pledges. The move could accelerate convergence between DeFi and traditional finance, but its long-term viability will depend on evolving regulatory attitudes.
