What happened: Bitcoin Bancorp (BCBC), formerly Bullet Blockchain, acquired 2,547 crypto ATMs from bankrupt Bitcoin Depot for $620,750 in a court-supervised auction. The purchase includes about a quarter of Bitcoin Depot's 9,200+ kiosks, as well as IP, trademarks, and the BitcoinDepot.com domain for an additional $110,500. Bitcoin Depot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2026 after a 49% year-over-year revenue decline and a swing from $12.2 million profit to a $9.5 million loss in Q1. The sale price is less than 3% of the company's Q4 2025 book value for its property and equipment.
Why it matters: The acquisition, at a steep discount, highlights the ongoing distress in the crypto ATM sector, with micro-cap firms like BCBC stepping in as buyers of last resort. Bitcoin Depot's collapse and the fire-sale pricing raise questions about the long-term viability of physical crypto infrastructure amid digital wallet adoption and regulatory scrutiny. The sector's contraction may signal further consolidation or a shift in business models for crypto access points.
