Bitcoin Recovers $80,000 as Liquidations Accompany the Rally

What happened: Bitcoin recovered to approximately $80,451–$80,500 during the November 4 Wall Street session after trading below $76,000 overnight, with reports describing a daily advance of roughly 3%–3.5%. Ether traded around $2,423–$2,433, up approximately 6%, while more than $320 million in short positions were liquidated within a 30-minute window. The recovery followed the reported Democratic sweep of both congressional chambers, and crypto-linked equities also advanced, including approximately 6% gains for MicroStrategy and Coinbase and a 15% rise for Block.

Why it matters: Bitwise investment chief Matt Hougan argued that the Binance breach had limited market impact and distinguished an exchange compromise from a failure of Bitcoin’s network, while citing historical analysis that found no consistent relationship between exchange breaches and subsequent 30-day Bitcoin performance. That interpretation helps explain why custody concerns and a price rally can coexist, but the liquidation figure also suggests that forced buying contributed to the move and cautions against reading every dollar of appreciation as fresh, discretionary conviction. Bitcoin remained below its pre-breach highs, so the rebound alone does not establish that the market had fully absorbed the loss or resolved its political uncertainty.
