Bitcoiners Go Wild as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Makes Surprise Appearance at Bitcoin-Themed Bar

The Bitcoin community exploded Thursday night after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made an unannounced appearance at the grand opening of Pubkey DC, a new Bitcoin-themed bar in Washington. The surprise visit was immediately seen by many as a symbolic signal for Bitcoin's future.

"The Treasury Secretary showing up at the Pubkey DC opening is one of those moments I'll look back on and say: 'it was all so obvious,'" said Ben Werkman — Chief Investment Officer at Strive Treasury — in a post on X. Steven Lubka, Head of Investor Relations at Nakamoto, called it "the signal you've been waiting for."

Seen as a Crypto-Friendly Figure

The excitement is not without reason. Since late 2024, the crypto community has viewed Scott Bessent as a supporter of digital assets. During the debate over his nomination as Treasury Secretary, Bessent repeatedly emphasized that the U.S. should aim to become the global hub for digital assets.

He has also backed several crypto-related bills this year, including the GENIUS Act, and has hinted that the Treasury Department is exploring "budget-neutral" options to purchase Bitcoin for a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

The "Signal" Arrives as Bitcoin Pulls Back

Bessent's appearance comes as Bitcoin is going through a period of psychological weakness. After setting an all-time high of $125,100 on October 5, Bitcoin has fallen sharply and is currently trading around $85,500.

Data from research platform Sanbase shows social media discussion about Bitcoin is split roughly down the middle:

  • Half are predicting the price could drop further to around $20,000–$70,000
  • The other half still expect Bitcoin to bounce back to $100,000–$130,000

Against this volatile backdrop, a crypto-friendly Treasury Secretary showing up at a community Bitcoin event is being viewed by many as a meaningful milestone — though some traders caution that "in a market like this, signals like that tend to get ignored until people look back and realize what they meant."

Pubkey DC: Bitcoin Community's New Home Base in the Nation's Capital

Pubkey DC is the sister venue of Pubkey New York — a bar that drew major attention in 2022 and even made national headlines when Donald Trump stopped by in September 2024 during his presidential campaign.

Scott Bessent's presence at the Pubkey DC grand opening not only thrilled the Bitcoin community but also stoked hope that U.S. policy toward digital assets may be entering a new chapter — one that is friendlier, more open, and strategically deliberate.
