Crédit Mutuel Arkéa Confirms Fraud After $133 Million Theft Allegation

What happened: Investigator ZachXBT identified French cooperative bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa as the alleged victim of an exchange-account theft exceeding $133 million, revising an initial $106 million estimate after tracing another $27 million in withdrawals. CoinDesk subsequently reported that the bank confirmed an attack had enabled fraudulent transactions and said the situation was under control, while declining to specify whether stolen assets were fiat or cryptocurrency and stating customers suffered no financial losses. Separately, Bitquery traced $108.8 million in USDC withdrawals from Kraken, Crypto.com and OKX accounts over 21 hours on November 1–2.

Why it matters: The bank’s acknowledgment supports the existence of an incident, but its limited disclosure does not independently confirm every element of the investigator’s account or the full alleged loss. The $108.8 million traced withdrawal figure also describes a specific observed flow and should not be presented as interchangeable with ZachXBT’s broader $133 million estimate. ZachXBT expressed high confidence that the attacker was unrelated to Lazarus, underscoring why this case should be assessed separately from the North Korea attribution attached to Binance’s hack.
