What happened: On October 17-18, an attacker exploited Cysic’s bridge infrastructure, minting 10 million CYS tokens and selling 7.2 million for approximately $727,000, which was then bridged to Ethereum. The exploit stemmed from unauthorized database access and a compromised bridge message. Cysic blacklisted the attacker’s address within 76 minutes, freezing the remaining 2.8 million tokens. No user assets or the mainnet were affected.
Why it matters: The breach underscores the persistent risks in cross-chain bridges and the speed at which attackers can monetize exploits. While Cysic responded quickly, the majority of illicitly minted tokens were already moved off-platform. The incident also highlights the challenge of securing both on-chain and off-chain infrastructure, especially for newer projects in the zero-knowledge proof space.
