What happened: DeepSeek’s new V4.1 Flash AI model scored 81.2/100 on the OpenDesign Arena benchmark, just 1.5 points behind OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra (82.7/100) but at only 1.4% of the cost ($0.023 vs $1.61 per design task). The model, released September 10, 2026, also delivered results in less than half the time of Astra. Among 13 models tested, only Astra outperformed DeepSeek, and all others cost more.

Why it matters: The results suggest open-source and cost-efficient AI models are rapidly closing the gap with top-tier proprietary systems.
