Fear Grips the Crypto Market: $230 Billion Wiped Out Overnight

The global crypto market just suffered one of its sharpest single-day drops in months, with over $230 billion in market cap wiped out within 24 hours. The Fear & Greed Index — the investor sentiment gauge tracked by CoinMarketCap — plunged to 28, falling deep into "Fear" territory and approaching "Extreme Fear", its lowest reading since April.

According to CoinMarketCap data, total crypto market cap fell 6%, from $3.78 trillion down to $3.54 trillion, marking one of the steepest single-session declines since the start of Q4.

🔻 Major Coins Tumble Across the Board

Bitcoin (BTC) dropped nearly 6%, now trading around $106,000. Ethereum (ETH) fell sharply by 8% to $3,700, while BNB shed more than 12%, leading all major losers. Other large-cap altcoins including Solana (SOL) and XRP also slid more than 7% over the past 24 hours.

🧨 Derivatives and Memecoins Caught in the Selloff

According to CoinGlass data, nearly $556 million in leveraged positions were liquidated across exchanges, with $451 million coming from long positions. While lower than last week's cascade, the figure still reflects a significant rise in investor anxiety.

The memecoin sector — which had shown tentative signs of recovery earlier in the week — crashed 33%, while the NFT market fell below $5 billion in market cap, its lowest level since July.

📉 Bitcoin ETFs See Heavy Outflows

Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows exceeding $536 million on Thursday, while Ethereum ETFs also saw $56 million in outflows, signaling that bearish sentiment is spreading even among institutional investors.

🌍 Panic Spreads to Wall Street

The fear wasn't limited to crypto — the Fear & Greed Index for traditional assets also dropped to 22, equivalent to "Extreme Fear." The move was driven by concerns over credit risk, regional banking instability, and escalating U.S.-China trade tensions, which sent U.S. equities broadly lower.

Against this backdrop, analysts are warning that the crypto market could face continued volatility in the near term, as investors shift into defensive mode and global liquidity continues to tighten.
