MetaMask Hints at Token Launch While Linea Keeps Delaying Its TGE: Golden Opportunity or Just Stalling?

On May 14, MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay sent the Web3 community into a frenzy after revealing that the development team is "still considering" launching a native token for the MetaMask wallet. Without giving specifics, he emphasized that under a looser regulatory framework like the Trump administration, "many token launch models could become safer." The news quickly reignited expectations of a major airdrop from the largest Ethereum wallet in existence — especially given that MetaMask already has over 3 million monthly active users

Without giving specifics, he emphasized that under a looser regulatory framework like the Trump administration, "many token launch models could become safer."

The news quickly reignited expectations of a major airdrop from the largest Ethereum wallet in existence — especially given that MetaMask already has over 3 million monthly active users yet still has no native token to speak of.

Linea's TGE Keeps Getting Pushed Back — and the Community Is Losing Patience

For now, though, community attention seems to be shifting toward Linea — a Layer 2 project backed by ConsenSys — which runs an LXP points system that promises to convert into tokens down the road.

After announcing a TGE delay from Q1 to Q2 2025, Linea cited reasons including "unfinished tokenomics" and "complex regulatory procedures." Most users, however, see these as excuses for an indefinitely delayed launch — especially when competitors like Starknet and zkSync have already completed their token launches.

On-chain data shows total value locked on Linea declining sharply, with TVL sitting below $300 million, while users grow increasingly frustrated over an airdrop opportunity that looks murkier by the day.

MetaMask: Losing Market Share — Is a Token Launch the Differentiator It Needs?

Despite remaining the top wallet in the Ethereum ecosystem, MetaMask Swap's transaction market share has collapsed from around 77% at end of 2022 to under 3% today. Meanwhile, wallets built directly into exchanges are expanding fast — particularly on Solana, where capital flows are clearly concentrated.

A token launch paired with DAO-based governance, transaction cashback, swap and cross-chain bridge incentives, and more could be MetaMask's play to "retain users" and stand out in an increasingly cutthroat Web3 wallet race.

A Regulatory Tailwind — Clearing the Path for New Tokens?

Back in June 2023, the SEC sued ConsenSys, alleging that MetaMask was operating as an unregistered securities broker. However, in February 2025, the SEC unexpectedly dropped the lawsuit — a positive signal that a legal token launch by MetaMask could be on the table in the near future.

Bottom Line: Token Launch — Hype Play or Strategic Pivot?

While the community waits on a MetaMask airdrop or a Linea TGE, the "delay" strategy seems to be keeping ConsenSys products in the conversation. But if the wait drags on too long, users may migrate to platforms with clearer roadmaps and more transparent rewards.

With the crypto market gradually recovering and U.S. regulatory signals loosening, MetaMask may be sitting on a golden opportunity to flip the script — if they can move at the right moment.
