Quantum Wallet Recovery Tool Debuts—But Satoshi’s Coins Remain Lost

What happened: Project Eleven unveiled a prototype zero-knowledge proof tool that lets BIP-32 wallets prove ownership and recover coins after a quantum attack, running a proof in just 243 milliseconds on a standard laptop. However, this method cannot recover coins from pre-2012 addresses—including Satoshi Nakamoto’s estimated 1.1 million BTC—since they lack the necessary key-derivation structure. The tool is unaudited, supports only three address types, and is not live on any chain.

Why it matters: The advance offers a potential migration path for millions of BTC at risk from quantum computing, but leaves the earliest (and most mythologized) coins permanently vulnerable. With roughly 6.5–6.9 million BTC still exposed to quantum risk, the tool’s limitations underscore the urgency and complexity of post-quantum migration. The solution is a technical leap, but not a panacea—especially for legacy coins.
