Strategy, BlackRock, and Coinbase Lead $15M Quantum-Proof Bitcoin Security Consortium

What happened: Nine major crypto and finance firms—including Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy—announced a $15 million pledge over three years to fund research and development aimed at protecting Bitcoin from future quantum computing threats. Each member will direct its portion of the funding independently. The consortium, coordinated by Brink’s Mike Schmidt, will not advocate specific code changes or claim to represent the developer community. Galaxy separately launched a $5 million Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative on July 21, 2026.

Why it matters: The move comes amid growing debate over the timeline and severity of quantum threats to Bitcoin’s cryptography. ARK estimates that roughly 35% of BTC supply sits in quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Project Eleven puts 6.9 million BTC at risk if a "Q-Day" arrives by 2029. However, some consortium members, including Blockstream CEO Adam Back and Strategy’s Michael Saylor, have previously downplayed the immediacy of the risk, suggesting a 20-40 year horizon or calling the threat "overstated." The funding signals a shift toward proactive defense, even as the industry remains divided on urgency.
