The Wide Gap Between Investor Interest in XRP vs. Solana, According to the Head of Coinbase Asset Management

The crypto market has yet to reach a clear consensus on which asset will lead after Bitcoin and Ethereum, according to Anthony Bassili, President of Coinbase Asset Management, speaking with Cointelegraph at The Bridge conference in New York.

Bassili said the "standard" portfolio structure for most investors today still revolves around two familiar names.
"Investors are very clear about their priority order: the first asset is Bitcoin. The next is still Bitcoin and Ethereum," he said.

Solana "Likely" Holds the Third Spot — But the Gap With XRP Is Significant

According to Bassili, Solana is likely the leading candidate for the third position, as it continues to attract growing attention from institutional players and retail investors alike. However, he emphasized that after Solana there is a "very wide gap" when it comes to XRP.

"The market is still very uncertain about which asset comes after Solana. The gap between investor interest in Solana and XRP is significant," Bassili said.

Despite XRP's long track record and strong community, Bassili noted that institutional investors have yet to genuinely view XRP as an asset capable of breaking into the crypto market's top four.

Strong ETF Inflows and Ripple's Major Strategic Moves

On its first day of trading, Canary Capital's XRP ETF hit $58 million in volume, making it the most impressive ETF launch of 2025 — surpassing even many traditional ETFs.

Additionally, Ripple has recently executed a series of strategic moves:

  • Acquired a digital asset custody firm
  • Launched a stablecoin orchestration layer platform
  • Acquired a broker-dealer to expand its service capabilities

Bassili commented: "They're doing everything right. The question is whether the market thinks XRP is ready to be a top-four asset."

The Real Question Is Network Activity and Liquidity

According to him, even though XRP is well-operated, what investors actually need to see is network usage velocity and XRP's role in the global liquidity ecosystem.

"If you want to be a top-tier asset, you have to demonstrate real activity and real liquidity flows. That's what investors are still waiting to see from XRP," Bassili added.

Crypto Valuations Still Driven by Narrative — Until Real Cash Flows Materialize

Bassili also noted that the crypto market is typically driven more by narrative, expectations, and sentiment than by actual cash flows.
"The market isn't always priced correctly. When real cash flows and real activity show up, the story will change," he concluded.
