PeerDAS – A Turning Point for Scalability

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently confirmed that PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling) will play a central role in resolving the ecosystem's scalability bottleneck. The technology is set to ship in the Fusaka upgrade, scheduled for December 3, 2025.

PeerDAS lets nodes verify data availability without downloading the entire blockchain. Rather than processing massive amounts of data, each node only needs to download a small portion (a "chunk") and uses statistical sampling to confirm that the full dataset exists across the network. Vitalik put it this way: "This is the key to scaling L2s, and ultimately L1."

Solving the Layer 2 Bottleneck

As rollups — Layer 2 scaling solutions — continue to gain dominance, the biggest chokepoint remains data availability on Layer 1. PeerDAS is expected to break through that constraint, enabling rollups to operate more smoothly, reducing transaction costs, and improving overall efficiency across the Ethereum network.

Alongside this, the Fusaka upgrade will also double blob capacity (from 6 to 12 blobs per block, with the maximum rising from 9 to 18). Throughout 2025, Ethereum will also roll out two Blob Parameter Only (BPO) upgrades to push the blob ceiling to 15 and then 21, further expanding data throughput.

Cautious Optimism

Vitalik noted that this is new and complex technology, and that developers need to exercise "extreme caution during testing" before scaling it up. That said, he believes that once successfully deployed, PeerDAS will lay the foundation for Ethereum to become a blockchain platform capable of serving billions of users worldwide.

Conclusion

PeerDAS is more than a technical improvement — it's a strategic move that brings Ethereum closer to its vision of a globally accessible, low-cost, high-performance blockchain. With the Fusaka upgrade, Ethereum is gearing up for its next major leap in scalability and real-world adoption.
