X Platform Mass-Bans Crypto Accounts: Community in Panic as Major KOLs in China and Internationally Get Hit

On June 12, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) suddenly launched a mass account suspension campaign targeting the crypto space, affecting numerous prominent KOLs and actively operating projects in the Web3 community.

Among the suspended accounts were several well-known names in the Chinese-speaking community, including:

  • @gmgnai (GMGN's official account)
  • @haze0x (co-founder of GMGN)
  • @Wolfy_XBT (also known as "Sha Po Lang")
  • @brc20niubi (Wang Xiao Er)
  • @0xCryptoWizard (The Wizard)
  • @Ga__ke (gake)

On the international side, the official ElizaOS account and founder @shawmakesmagic were also caught up in the same situation. Several accounts linked to the TRUMP wallet were also suspended at one point before being reinstated.

Not Just GMGN — A Behavior-Based Crackdown?

At first, many assumed the suspensions were limited to the GMGN ecosystem, but subsequent developments revealed the scale of the incident went far beyond that initial assumption.

According to observations by KOL Kuai Dong (@_FORAB), the suspended accounts shared several common traits:

  • Recently active in the AI Agent and Meme space
  • Engaged with topics such as ai16z, ElizaOS, and GMGN
  • Sudden spikes in follower growth
  • High posting frequency, making them easy targets for platform systems flagging manipulative behavior

This suggests X likely deployed a behavioral anomaly detection algorithm targeting patterns rather than specific individuals or language communities.

A Wave of Rumors and Spreading Anxiety

The community quickly fell into a state of panic. Unverified rumors spread across Telegram claiming "the development team in China was arrested" or that "political factors were involved." However, analysts largely dismissed these theories as unfounded.

X is a U.S.-based platform, and its moderation operates primarily through automated AI systems with no direct connection to Chinese law enforcement. Speculations involving political motives, commercial targeting, or coordinated attacks all lack clear evidence.

Similarly, some suspected a Meme image involving Trump and Musk was the trigger — but many accounts that never posted the image were still suspended, while other accounts posting political memes were left untouched.

This Has Happened Before

At the peak of the NFT boom in 2021, X similarly suspended a wave of major accounts without warning — including PlanB, Willy Woo, and TheCryptoDog. Most accounts were eventually restored following community and media backlash.

If Your Account Gets Suspended: What to Do

Experienced KOLs have shared several approaches:

  1. File a direct appeal through X's support platform, explaining that the suspension may stem from VPN usage or multiple admins causing unusual IP activity.
  2. Reach out to regional representatives or X's advertising partner companies for assistance.
  3. Wait for automatic reinstatement, though this can take anywhere from several months to over a year.

Advice for Web3 Content Creators and Projects

In an era of AI-driven content moderation, tactics that once worked as growth strategies — "content spamming," "constant meme posting," "excessive cross-engagement" — have now become latent risks. Some practical recommendations:

  • Avoid repeatedly posting contract/token links within short time windows
  • Reduce how often you reference hot keywords like "AI Agent," "airdrop," "meme season," etc.
  • Avoid coordinated group engagement (likes/retweets/comments) flooding a single account or piece of content
  • Do not grow your follower count through sudden, artificial spikes

Conclusion

X's sudden heavy-handed actions against multiple crypto accounts serve as a clear reminder: your content and behavior on the platform are now under close scrutiny by AI algorithms.

Despite being a free-speech platform, this environment is becoming increasingly unpredictable for Web3 creators and projects alike.
