Nocturne Deploys V1 on Ethereum Mainnet

Nocturne, a privacy-focused transaction protocol, has deployed its V1 version on the Ethereum mainnet.

Key Features and Approach:

Unlike other privacy protocols, Nocturne will operate as an independent and parallel account rather than a standalone tool or ecosystem. It integrates privacy into an account layer, resembling a smart contract wallet more closely.

• Compatibility: Nocturne will be compatible with most DeFi protocols by tracking the in-and-out states of tokens. The team plans to integrate more protocols over time. Furthermore, protected individual accounts will expand across both Layer-1 and Layer-2.
• Privacy Implementation: Co-founder Luke Tchang highlighted their shift from traditional anonymity tools. He stated, "With V1, we are moving away from traditional anonymity tools. Privacy will be implemented at the account layer, and V1 is a step towards realizing that vision. Our goal is to ensure that everyone, from individuals to large organizations, can transact safely without revealing their entire financial history."

Current and Future Plans:

The V1 version supports UI features such as deposits, transfers, swaps, and staking. Future plans include transitioning to a decentralized governance model and adopting a permissionless approach.

In October 2023, Nocturne Labs raised $6 million in a seed round with participation from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

• Privacy Sector Challenges: Despite advancements, privacy products face significant legal challenges. Tornado Cash is struggling with recent judgments from US authorities. Similarly, Aztec had to reduce its Connect product line due to technical reasons.
