Polygon Launches Public Testnet for zkEVM Solution

Polygon has announced the launch of the public testnet for zkEVM, a solution described by the company as the “next major advancement for the Ethereum ecosystem.”

With the advancement of Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology, Polygon aims to become the primary scaling solution for Ethereum, the largest blockchain ecosystem in the market today.'

At the ETHCC Paris event in July 2022, Polygon revealed plans to roll out a public testnet for zkEVM this summer, with the mainnet expected in early 2023. Today's announcement can be seen as a slight delay in this timeline.

Polygon’s latest technology will provide a ZK Rollup platform compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This means developers won’t need to learn new languages and can seamlessly migrate smart contracts from other EVM platforms.

ZK Rollup solutions will aggregate transactions into batches, then use compact (encrypted) data to verify the validity of these transactions.

While zk Rollup technology has long been considered complex, recent announcements from Polygon, Matter Labs, and Scroll may be the first steps toward a new era for zkEVM solutions.

Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic stated:

“zkEVM is expected to take a few more years to become widely adopted. This makes today’s milestone significant, not only for Polygon but for the entire Web3 industry.”

With the public testnet now live, popular applications on Polygon, such as Aave, Uniswap, and the Lens social network, can begin testing this solution starting today.
