In an announcement early morning on January 12th (Vietnam time), Polygon zkEVM outlined its upcoming development roadmap with several noteworthy details.
Polygon zkEVM has now been operational for 10 months since its launch. Throughout the beta mainnet phase, this Zk-Rollups solution focused on testing, scaling, and infrastructure development. Additionally, Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin executed the first transaction on this network.
We launched Polygon zkEVM as the first full-featured, open source zkEVM ever made available. With that launch comes responsibility, including high levels of security and uptime. Starting January 12th, 2024, the project officially enters Phase 2, aiming to increase the number of dApps within its ecosystem and enhance on-chain activities. Over the next two months, Polygon zkEVM plans to roll out several high-quality applications to its user community. Furthermore, the project will allocate time to upgrade the Polygon zkEVM client to improve network throughput.
Polygon zkEVM is slated for full deployment in the final stage by March of this year. During this crucial phase, the platform will implement a major upgrade to its client to ensure scalability for billions of transactions. Simultaneously, Polygon zkEVM will introduce various campaigns and launch additional dApps.
Initially, Polygon began as a Proof-of-Stake sidechain. In March 2023, the project introduced its second network, Polygon zkEVM. Months later, Polygon Labs engineers proposed integrating these networks into a new ecosystem dubbed Polygon 2.0, also introducing the new POL token to replace MATIC for upcoming upgrades.
Utilizing Zk-Rollups, Polygon zkEVM performs computations off-chain to improve processing speed and reduce transaction costs, while still benefiting from Ethereum's security features.
Additionally, Polygon provides the Chain Development Kit (CDK) for layer-2 development, catering to projects interested in utilizing Zero-Knowledge Proof mechanisms. Polygon Labs co-founder Sandeep Nailwal previously proposed leveraging CDK to create a layer-2 for ApeCoin. Currently, several layer-2 solutions have been developed using the CDK infrastructure, including Immutable zkEVM, IDEX, Palm Network, Astar zkEVM, and most recently, Manta Pacific.
