Polygon zkEVM Launches, Vitalik Buterin Executes First Transaction
After a long wait, Polygon has officially launched the mainnet for its zk-Rollups solution, Polygon zkEVM. Notably, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin conducted the first transaction on this network.

Polygon zkEVM: A Major Milestone
The Polygon zkEVM network has been under development for the past year with the ambition of providing a scalable solution for Ethereum. Using zk-Rollups, this Layer-2 solution performs off-chain computations to boost transaction speeds and reduce costs, while still inheriting Ethereum's security features.
Key Highlights:
- EVM Compatibility: Polygon zkEVM is designed to be fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing Ethereum developers to use existing infrastructure and tools seamlessly.
- Developer-Friendly: Vitalik Buterin highlighted that zkEVM allows for the deployment of Ethereum applications with minimal adjustments, utilizing existing development tools like Remix and wallet integrations. Nearly 6,000 smart contracts have been deployed on the testnet without major issues.
Today, Polygon Labs is announcing that Polygon zkEVM is fully open-source. Every single component is licensed with AGPL v3, including the zkProver, which is where all of the ZK magic happens 🪄

Adoption and Ecosystem
The launch has attracted over 50 crypto projects spanning Web3, gaming, and popular Dapps. Supporting services such as wallets and data explorers have also announced compatibility with Polygon’s new solution. Notable applications like Uniswap and Aave have proposed governance measures to facilitate the deployment of products on Polygon zkEVM’s Mainnet Beta.
Polygon Labs, the team behind the development, has conducted two audit rounds and an internal review over four months to meet security requirements. Despite this, users are advised to remain cautious as the solution is still in its beta phase.
Open Source and Community Involvement
Polygon plans to release zkEVM's source code under the AGPL v3 license, encouraging developers to contribute and collaborate with the community.
zkEVM technology is hailed as a top solution for scaling Ethereum, alongside other notable projects like zkSync and Scroll. Recently, zkSync also announced the mainnet launch for zkSync Era, its own EVM-compatible zk-Rollups solution.
