Polygon zkEVM Offline for Over 12 Hours
Early morning on March 24, 2024, users discovered that the Polygon zkEVM network had been offline for several hours. Given the reduced community activity over the weekend, the incident went unnoticed for quite some time.
On their official platform X, the Polygon team announced:
"The mainnet beta of Polygon zkEVM is experiencing a sequencer issue causing block reorganization. We are actively resolving the issue and will publish a detailed research report afterwards.
Only the Polygon zkEVM network is affected, while the Polygon PoS networks, Polygon CDK, and other chains built on Polygon CDK are not impacted."
The sequencer is responsible for aggregating transactions from multiple users into ordered blocks, assigning a positional order to these blocks.
By noon on March 24, as reported by Coin68, the Polygon zkEVM explorer indicated that the network had resumed operation, marking a 12-hour blockchain "shutdown."
Polygon zkEVM Mainnnet Beta faced an issue with its sequencer due to an L1 reorg. We are working on fully resolving the issue and will follow up with a detailed post-mortem.

This only impacts Polygon zkEVM (which is the only rollup) and does not impact Polygon PoS, Polygon CDK,…
Polygon zkEVM, a Layer-2 EVM-compatible solution, was launched on March 27, 2023. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin executed the first transaction, demonstrating support for this scalability solution.
Utilizing Zk-Rollups, Polygon zkEVM conducts off-chain computations to enhance processing speed and reduce transaction costs, while inheriting Ethereum's security features.
