Another contender in the zkEVM race on Ethereum, Scroll, has started testing its zkEVM solution on the Goerli testnet.

Scroll, a developer focused on layer-2 scalability solutions for Ethereum, has announced the launch of its zkEVM solution on the Goerli testnet.

By bringing Scroll to a public testnet, developers are giving the Ethereum community an opportunity to fully test this layer-2 solution and identify any potential vulnerabilities before the project officially deploys on the Ethereum mainnet later this year.

zkEVM refers to layer-2 blockchains developed using zk-Rollups technology, which employs zero-knowledge proofs for data verification while maintaining compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to connect to the largest smart contract network in the world. zkEVM solutions offer higher security and fraud resistance compared to layer-2 solutions that use optimistic rollups, such as Arbitrum and Optimism.

Scroll is taking a more challenging path for its zkEVM by using Solidity, the same programming language as Ethereum. The team faces the complex task of ensuring that zero-knowledge proofs can function seamlessly with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. This approach, however, allows developers to work with a single programming language, potentially attracting more projects to Scroll. An alternative would be to create a new programming language for zero-knowledge proofs and then translate Ethereum applications into this new language for compatibility.

In addition to Scroll, other projects developing zkEVM solutions, such as Polygon, ConsenSys, and zkSync, are also competing to see who will be the first to deliver a complete solution to the community. Polygon zkEVM has already set its launch date for March 27.

However, Scroll’s team is not overly concerned about being first. They point out that while Optimism launched after Arbitrum, both are now competing for adoption among Ethereum projects and users.

Scroll has been developing its zkEVM solution for two years and currently boasts a development team of 60 engineers.
