On October 30th, Puerto Rican media reported the unexpected death of Nikolai Mushegian, a key developer for MakerDAO. The 29-year-old crypto programmer was confirmed to have drowned after being swept away by strong currents while swimming.

Mushegian was a relatively low-profile yet highly respected figure in the Ethereum community. He was instrumental in designing the DAI stablecoin for MakerDAO, co-founded the Balancer platform, and also contributed to the development of the BitShares blockchain network.

MakerDAO founder Rune Christensen has shared heartfelt tributes, praising Mushegian’s contributions:

“Nikolai was one of the early pioneers of Ethereum and smart contracts. He foresaw the risks of smart contract hacks and invented security mechanisms in smart contract design. MakerDAO would have collapsed long ago without his contributions.”

Many prominent figures in the crypto community have expressed their condolences and paid their respects to the departed developer.

However, there are conspiracy theories circulating regarding Mushegian’s death, fueled by recent Twitter posts. Mushegian had claimed he was being monitored by intelligence agencies and was involved in illegal activities, suggesting he might be targeted for elimination to silence him.
