Starknet Announces Appchains Toolkit

Ethereum's layer-2 solution Starknet has launched "Appchains," a toolkit designed to help developers build sub-blockchains within its ecosystem.

What Are Appchains?

Announced on the evening of 19/07, Starknet introduced the "Appchains" framework, enabling developers to deploy custom blockchains on this layer-2 solution using the Starknet Stack programming toolkit.

Appchains are specialized blockchains built for individual decentralized applications (DApps), designed to handle transactions for those specific applications rather than a broader ecosystem. This marks a significant step in Ethereum's scalability roadmap.

Features of Starknet Appchains

Starknet's appchains will leverage STARK proofs technology for enhanced security and are programmed using StarkWare's Cairo language. Additionally, each project can customize various parameters for their appchain, including transaction fee logic and consensus mechanisms.

A representative from Starknet commented:

"Starknet Appchains provide an optimal programming environment to customize a version of Starknet, granting greater control over technical parameters, reducing fees, scaling, and supporting privacy features."

Growing Interest in Appchains

Starknet emphasized that the demand for appchains has been emerging over the years and is now gaining the necessary attention.

Previously, other major Ethereum layer-2 solutions also introduced similar toolkits for building sub-blockchains, including Optimism's OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, zkSync Era's ZK Stack, and Polygon Supernets.
