Optimism Deploys Fjord Upgrade on Mainnet
On the evening of July 10th, Optimism officially deployed the Fjord upgrade on its mainnet with several notable changes.
Optimism Deploys Fjord Upgrade on Mainnet
This latest upgrade on the OP Mainnet includes a significant change known as RIP-7212. Additionally, networks within the Superchain system will benefit from these new features.
RIP-7212 (equivalent to Ethereum's EIP-7212 standard) proposes changes to the Blockchain encoding method to align with verification mechanisms in traditional markets. Through this update, user transaction confirmation operations can be executed using traditional security measures such as fingerprint scanning or Face ID.

Moreover, transaction costs are estimated to decrease by 5 to 15% due to the efficiency of the Brotli data compression mechanism.
Regarding the operation of Sequencers, the drift time will be increased from the current 10 minutes to 30 minutes. This extended time will provide Sequencers with more leeway to address issues at Layer-1 Nodes. Expanding this timeframe will also reduce the likelihood of Layer-2 network disruptions during incidents.
The Fjord upgrade marks a new milestone in Optimism's development roadmap following Bedrock (June 2023), Canyon (January 2024), and Delta (February 2024). In June 2024, the network also integrated the Fraud Proof verification mechanism to elevate Optimism to a "Stage 1" Layer-2 classification.
