User loses 3 Rare Bored Ape NFTs to Phishing Scam
As first reported by on-chain investigator ZachXBT, an NFT investor fell victim to a phishing attack, losing 3 Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs. The blockchain detective noted that the attacker's wallet was linked to previous NFT BAYC scams, though specifics of this incident remain unclear.
Phishing, a form of online attack, involves hackers impersonating trusted organizations or individuals to steal user information such as private keys, login credentials, passwords, and other critical data to carry out unauthorized transactions or illicit gains.
The compromised Bored Ape NFTs include BAYC #7531, BAYC #6736, and BAYC #2100, valued at 21 ETH (62,960 USD), 15.8505 WETH (47,500 USD), and 18 ETH (54,000 USD) respectively, based on data from the NFT marketplace OpenSea.
Despite the high value of the stolen NFTs, the floor price of BAYC NFTs has significantly dropped in recent months. The once-popular collection has seen its floor price hit a three-year low. According to data from The Block, the floor price of Bored Ape Yacht Club has decreased to 15.09 ETH since May 8th. Trading volume for the collection has fluctuated around 13.3 million USD from April 28th to May 5th.
As previously reported by Coin68, crypto phishing attacks in 2023 caused losses totaling approximately 295 million USD, affecting a total of 324,000 victims. The highest amount defrauded from an individual user last year amounted to 24 million USD.
In the crypto industry, common tactics employed by fraudsters include compromising project websites or social media accounts to redirect traffic to malicious websites, promoting fake airdrop tokens, and posting harmful links in social media comments.
