Vitalik Buterin Updates Ethereum Development Roadmap for 2024

In a post early on December 31st, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared an updated roadmap for the second-largest cryptocurrency blockchain in the world.

Compared to the late 2022 version, the framework of Ethereum's development roadmap remains largely unchanged, consisting of six simultaneous developmental stages for ETH post The Merge event (introduction of Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism).

However, Vitalik Buterin listed crucial upgrades that he believes need to be swiftly implemented:

  • The Merge: Implementing Single-slot Finality to address issues with the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism.
  • The Surge: Upgrading Dencun to deploy EIP-4844, aiming to bring Ethereum and its layer-2 solutions closer to processing up to 100,000 transactions per second.
  • The Scourge: Addressing issues surrounding MEV (Miner Extractable Value) and risks from centralization in liquid staking pools such as those from Lido Finance.
  • The Verge: Simplifying block verification process by constructing the Verkle Tree, reducing the amount of data validators need to store.
  • The Purge: Streamlining the Ethereum protocol.
  • The Splurge: Addressing lingering issues such as improving the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and implementing Account Abstraction on a larger scale.

Nevertheless, the post by the ETH co-founder did not specify exact timelines for each stage. Ethereum has traditionally prioritized blockchain security and safety over rushing to meet outlined goals, often resulting in delays or slower-than-expected implementation of the roadmap.

In recent times, Vitalik Buterin has been actively engaged on social media platform X (Twitter), sharing personal views on the need to adjust the Proof-of-Stake mechanism to prevent network congestion on Ethereum. He also calls on the Ethereum community to return to the core values of cryptocurrencies such as decentralization, censorship resistance, and open-source principles.
